Scarce German circa 1600-1610 swept hilt rapier by Wolfgang Stantler of Munich, sharply tapering blade of a flattened diamond section, rectangular recessed ricasso struck on each side crowned S/T (mark of Wolfgang Stantler), iron hilt of flattened rounded bars, comprising down-curved quillon with finial, outer-ring joined at the base to both a pair of arms and to the lower ring-guard and also joined by a diagonal to the centre of the knuckle-guard, inner-guard of three slender diagonal bars joined to the knuckle-guard by a common branch, pommel of elliptical section rising to a prominent button, grip bound with plaited wire, 90cm double edged blade with numerous knicks, grip has slight movement, generally very fine and scarce. Similar examples have been identified as Munich Town Guard swords. The Wallace collection describes it as a cavalry sword. BUYER MUST COLLECT. (See photo)
