Harry Everington (British, 1929-2000), 'The Old Bailey’ chess set, one of three made by the artist in 1988, the queens modelled as Justice, the kings as judges, the knights and bishops as barristers, the rooks as the accused, and the pawns as jurors, each piece with inscribed and imprinted maker’s marks to base, the kings 16cm high, the queens 18.5cm high
Provenance: Purchased by the vendor from the estate of Tony Raynes (some pieces with Raynes Collection labels).
All pieces are some form of ceramic. One of the black knights shows a loss to the fingers of the right hand. Apart from this all pieces appear to be in good condition, but some do show the odd small firing crack and glazing fault, reflecting the hand-made nature of the pieces.
