Star Lot: A stunning original antique oil on canvas painting by the famed Irish artist Leo Whelan RHA (1892-1958). Shows a study of an Irish cottage with textural rendering of the foliage. While known for his portraits, over his artistic career Whelan produced a small number of landscapes, this work being one. The sticker for J.D. Spence on the verso, a popular framers for Irish artists of the time, dates the work to the late 19th century. Whelan's landscapes of this calibre sell at auction in the low thousands. Signed bottom left and housed in original wooden frame.

Born in Dublin 1892, Whelan studied painting and drawing at the Metropolitian School of Art under the tutelage of William Orpen. He would be become, along with fellow artists Sean Keating, Margaret Clarke, Sean Tuohy highly influential to the school of Irish painting in the early 20th century. A school which adhered strongly to the academic style of portraiture promoted by Opren. He was the designer of the first Free State commemorative stamp, issued in 1929 for the Centenary of Catholic Emancipation, a portrait of Daniel O'Connell. A large number of his works are held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, and his paintings have sold at Whytes for up to €40,000.
