Arthur Cramer James Wasse was born in Manchester, the son of John Angelo Wasse, a painter of miniature portraits. He moved to Germany in 1875, where he attended the Munich School and studied under Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886) and Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907). From 1895, the painter established his residence and studio in Rothenburg and regularly commuted between England and Germany.
He exhibited at The Royal Accademy, the Royal Society of British Artists, The Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, amongst others. His charming townscapes of Rothenburg and landscapes of the surrounding countryside are related to the Romantic style. In 1940, Rothenburg received an extensive donation of paintings initiated by the painter's widow. On the occasion of Wasse's 150th anniversary in 2004 a major retrospective was held in Rothenburg's Municipal Museum.
