POLAR EXPEDITION "SS TERRA NOVA" A set of twelve opthalmic instruments collated by Dr. William Clark Souter, ship's surgeon (1903/4) for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's relief ship Discovery. By Down, Young, Weiss and Luer. Five with polished ivory handles, the hinged case lined and fitted with dark red velvet retailed by Down Bros., 21 St. Thomas's St., London, the cover with an old label with inked inscription "Miss E.C. Souter, 1943" (Souter gifted the set to his daughter Elcy in 1943), and a further name (19)94, together with a copy of Don Aldridge's "The Rescue of Captain Scott", 1999, inscribed by the author as a gift to Elcy Broadhead (nee Souter) in 1999; stapled into the book is a copy of a letter sent to Elcy in 2005 and photographs of his medal, also a handwritten testimony by the vendor (Souter's great grand-daughter) (3) (Est. plus 24% premium inc.
