GB.PRE - STAMP 1605 GUNPOWDER PLOT & GUY FAWKES RELATED LETTER a 1600 (5th November) Elizabethan period "old English" letter from Thomas Lynne, addressed to "SIR THOMAS KNYVETT Knight, at Ashwell Thorpe Hall, give these with speade". On the night of 4-5th November 1605, Knyvett was the most active intervener in foiling the Gunpowder Plot. After an anonymous tip off, the King ordered Knyvett (as keeper of Whitehall Palace) to conduct a search of the cellars underneath Parliament, which he carried out with Edmund Doubleday, and Guy Fawkes was arrested by Knyvett whilst leaving the cellar shortly after midnight. Many barrels of gunpowder were found hidden under piles of firewood and coal. Biographical notes accompany. A delightful and historical artefact.
