The Renault GT Turbo, was introduced in 1985. It used a modified four cylinder, eight-valve Cléon 1,397 cc engine, a pushrod unit dating back to the 1962. It was turbocharged with an air-cooled Garrett T2 turbocharger. Weighing a mere 850 kg (1,874 lb), and producing 113 bhp, the GT Turbo had an excellent power-to-weight ratio, permitting it to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. To differentiate it from the standard 5, it came with plastic side skirts. In 1987 the facelifted Phase II was launched. Major changes in the Phase II version included installing water cooling to the turbocharger, aiding the Phase I's oil-cooled setup, which extended the life of the turbo. It also received a new ignition system which permitted it to rev 500 rpm higher. These changes boosted engine output up to over 118 bhp. Externally, the car was revamped, with changes that reduced the car's drag coefficient from 0.36 to 0.35, giving the Phase II a 0–60 mph time of 7.2 secs. In 1989 the GT Turbo received a new interior, and in 1990 the special edition Raider model was launched. In late 1991 the Renault 5 GT Turbo was discontinued.
This is an original Renault 5 GT Turbo. There is a comprehensive Service Record, and an MoT paper history dating back to the 1990s. This has a amazing portfolio of history ands bills, including a Service Book. The car has had a total of 7 owners, the last one having owned it since 2005. The speedo states 47,000 miles but the car has covered double that as the due to the speedo being reset in 1996 due to major engine work done by Renault, shown both in the comprehensive Service History and the old MoTs. Having been not on the road since 2013, the owner has revitalised the GT Turbo, including new MOT, brakes all round, exhaust sections, paint work restoration where needed, battery tray, extensive welding into the £1000's and new tyres all round. The condition of the car is good and it wouldn't take a lot to make it very good indeed.
