** DOURDAN (GRILLION) - IRISH INTERNEE(?) ASKING PARIS WAR MINISTRY IF HE IS "A PRISONER OR NOT"; Very fine 17 Pluviose [1805?] EL (sealed with wafer) from "J[oh]n. Flood... [Overseer] a la Manufacture de Grillion pres Durdon" to the Minister of War in Paris with partly fine "72/DOURDAN" on the front and m/s "2" on the flap. The letter is in English and seems to imply that the writer was on parole (and/or an internee); "I have received two advertisements to pay the Contributions; I comply to pay it with pleasure. I am ten years in France. I was married in the year 4. Sir... I presume to ask if I am as prisoner or not...". There are three brief Ministry endorsements inside. Most unusual. Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY
