A pair of George III Great Seige of Gibraltar gunmetal candle sticks by T. Warner cast from the canons of the siege of Gibraltar (Sept. 14th 1782), the bases faintly engraved with the detail of the battle and bearing Warner's makers marks below the square moulded bases, 27 cm overall height. The Great Siege of Gibraltar was broken in the early 1780s during the ongoing American War of Independence and was a joint attack conducted by the French and Spanish, attacking a much-beleaguered British outpost, it lasted for four years but was finally ended with the destruction of the Spanish and French ships and the captured cannon taken as “Booty” the battle was witnessed by hostile onlookers who were disappointed to see the British triumph over the combined foe of Spanish and French Two models of these commemorative candlesticks are known to exist the present pair are of the less commonly seen examples but both designs are quite rare.
