Norton produced their very last Commando models in 1978. Prior to this time, Norton engineers had been working on the P41 rotary-engined project, and this continued after the demise of the Commandos. In 1979 the Mark I appeared, and 25 examples were produced. These were followed in 1981 by a Mark II version which went into production as the Interpol II for sale to a few Police forces. The motorcycling public were clamouring for a civilian version of the bike, such was the esteem of the Norton name, and eventually it appeared in the form of the Classic, a limited edition of 100 machines released in 1987, dressed in the traditional Norton colours of silver, with black and red lines. Once the Classics had sold, the pressure was on for other machines, and this was eventually fulfilled, after some delays, by the water-cooled Commander in 1988.
The Commander was firstly seen in its police version (P52), then as the civilian version (P53), the water-cooled successor to the Classic. It features a full fairing which completely hides the engine, with Yamaha front forks and brakes also fitted. There were just 239 of the civilian type produced. The engine is mounted the other way round to the previous rotary models and so rotates in the opposite direction.
CSG, in its original Dorchester Grey, has been owned by our deceased vendor since 2011 when the mileage was some 54,000 miles, he used it often taking the mileage up to the current 59,083. It was last ridden in 2018 and has been regularly started up and run up to temperature. The engine has been rebuilt with new tips to the rotor but there is no invoice for this.
