Approximately 560 postcards in a shoebox – plus some photos, lettercards, calendar cards, three modern books of tear-away postcard cards and various snapshots (miniature photos by postcard publishers). The postcards comprise more than 130 modern tourist-style cards, approximately 75 standard-size cards from the 1970s/80s, and more than 350 standard-size cards from the Golden Age of collecting onwards. Although the condition of the postcards is extremely mixed – from poor to very good – there are some nice surprises in the older cards, which are mainly English topographical, but do include a few subject cards (such as comic and theatre) and a few foreign. We’ve picked out some of the best cards in our photographs -
two superb cards of the Chichester and Selsey Tramway Steam and Railbus; three Taylor Series cards of trams in Birchencliffe, Huddersfield; a magnificent view of The Mill at Barnham (West Sussex); six sepia semi-glossy cards of Thatcham, Berkshire; and some shipping – including the Cunard line RMS Aquitania and the RMS Mauretania. There are also a set of twelve Salmon-published sepia views of Bognor.
