EARLY STAMPED MAIL TO JAPAN; 18 Feb. 1865 env. (few peripheral faults; with contents) 'via Southampton' to Captain Mairis in Yokohama franked 6d Lilac tied by Bristol duplex and with Portishead and London cds on rear. Note: H.M.S Severn was sent to Yokohama following hostilities with the British Legation in Yedo (Tokyo). With four contemporary card-mounted photographs of Captain & Mrs Mairis. Illustrated in Royal Marines at page 46.
