Property of a lady - a late 19th / early 20th century Chinese embroidered silk robe decorated with scattered flowers & bats on a navy ground, with ivory ground cuffs (see illustration). Provenance - by repute General Sir Robert John Hay KCB (1828-1910), Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery, who served as Assistant Adjutant General of Artillery in China at the end of the Second Opium War, and was present at Sinho, Tangku, the capture of Tahu Forts and the surrender of Pekin in 1860, and thence by family descent to the present vendor.
