** THAME (OXON.) - CENSORED PAROLE P.O.W. (CAPTURED ON "LA BELLE POULE" IN 1806) LETTER TO FRANCE; Very fine 9 Sept. 1806 EL (wafer seal) from POW "Seyit" on parole in "Thame, Comte d'Oxford" identifying himself as having been "Captured on the frigate 'La Belle Poule' on 6 March 1806 [part of the] General Linois Division" (see Wikipedia; "Action of 13 March 1806") to a Bordeaux merchant concerning a letter of credit that he has drawn on the addressee. The letter has been initialled "AU" by the Thame Censor on the lower flap (see MFPWE, p.215; the only recorded example). It was probably sent via London to Harwich from where it was taken to Hamburg due to the French Blockade; it has a fine "R4HAMBURG" on the front and was charged "20" (decimes; 12 decimes ex GB + 8 decimes from Paris to Bordeaux). Intriguingly it was endorsed "Refuge 5 8bre 1806" on the top flap although it was received (filing note) on 12 October. Only one other POW letter from Thame has been recorded (of Sept. 1809).
