ABOUT ARTIST

Mashir Kresenshun is an artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was born in 1999 in Greytown, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The artist spent most of his early childhood on his grandparent’s farm drawing cartoons and exploring nature. Kresenshun and his nuclear family, to date, moved 22 times in connection to the various job opportunities his parents embarked upon. Kresenshun is a multidisciplinary artist, best known for his drawings, prints and paintings on brown cardboard. He also creates works on paper and canvas, however cardboard is his matrix of choice. The artist indicates that "the utilization of cardboard symbolizes the idea of durability, movement, possession, modern culture, transition, ambition, passion and weight". Kresenshun uses printmaking on cardboard as a unique mannerism, which sets him apart as an artist.
Racially classified as Indian, the artist narrates concepts and ideologies of "what it means to be Indian both globally and within contemporary South Africa". The artist explores aspects of multicultural identity and self-authenticity. In his work, the artist indicates that he "hopes to address the concept of the marginalized individual living in a liminal space". Kresenshun's prefers to expresses himself through drawing, painting and printmaking, adding sculptural elements to his pieces. The sculptural surface adds different dimensional plains. This integration signifies the piecing together of cultures. In 2019, Kresenshun received a Top 20 award in the Thami Mnyele competition and was part of the Top 100 in the Sasol New Signatures competition. The artist recently exhibited in a duo show at St Lorient Art/ Fashion Gallery in Pretoria entitled "The In-between: Batho le Naga (People and Land)". He also worked alongside a crew of artists on the prestigious Showmax TV series "Devilsdorp". Kresenshun studied at the University of Johannesburg and transferred to Artist Proof Studio to complete his studies. During the course of his studies the artist produced works from his studio based at August House in the heart of Johannesburg.
