Lewis Fry (1832-1921) - 'The Chalk Pit, Oxted', signed and inscribed verso, possibly in the artist's own hand, oil on canvas, 44" x 56"
In unlined condition, however, the picture may have been cleaned and partially restored some years ago, the original wooden stretcher bar is showing through in places down the left hand side edge and in the sky in the top left corner as well as the central wooden stretcher bar down the centre, which is partially showing through, there have been three small holes or tears which have now been patched at the back of the painting, one of which has partially interfered with the original inscription on the reverse and the restorer has then completed the lettering on the patch, this work was probably done in the 1970s or '80s, there is good thick impasto in places and the picture is contained within a fairly broad black painted frame with inner gilt slip.
