A Chinese carved rootwood figure of Shoulao, Qing dynasty, probably 18th / 19th century, the carved figure of Shoulao carrying a child and with a black painted hat, an old handwritten collector's label pasted to the back, dated 1850, on a later, European carved wooden base, overall 12¾in. (32.4cm.) high, old losses. Was obviously previously on a different base, as the front of the right foot is missing. Old chips to back of head on both figures and a couple of very old shrinkage cracks. Lovely patina throughout. Some losses to corners of label.
