** VERDUN - "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" COVER TO P.O.W. BUT ENDORSED "MORT"; Fine 7 Mar. 1812 E (presumably ex London) to "Dettinue Lieut. Col. Williams, Verdun" charged "16" with a mainly very fine "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" double-oval mark nicely placed on the front, above which there is the diminutive endorsement "Mort le 10 Avril" - presumably the letter arrived just after the addressee had died and so was returned to the sender. Exceptional undelivered POW letter.Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, FRANCE, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, RETURNED MAIL
