λ STEPHEN MELTON, GREAT IRISH DEER, A LIMITED EDITION SILVERED MODEL OF A STAGFROM THE LIMITED EDITON OF 5Engraved marks to the underside 47cm high Note: Stephen Melton modelled this sculpture from the skeleton of the extinct beast which is held in the Natural History Museum Merrion Square Dublin. Stephen is currently working near Huntley in Aberdeenshire and has a distinguished career in bronze making. The Giant Deer or Irish Elk (Megaceros giganteus) was the largest Deer that ever lived. It is not known for certain why or when exactly the Giant Deer became extinct but it is thought that a temporary return to arctic conditions from about 8500 BC to 8000 B. C. with its consequent effect on vegetation may have contributed to its decline.
