A RARE WILLIAM & MARY PEWTER GADROONED PINT MUG, CIRCA 1700-02. The tapering straight-sided body with a high band of lenticular beading, above diagonal gadrooning, crowned 'WR' mark (King William III) to rim, hollow cast handle with spade terminal, touchmark inside base of William Hux, London, (PS4935), height 13.5cm
Provenance: Former R. Boocock Collection, sold Sotheby's, Billingshurst, 22 September, 1992
Literature: Illustrated and discussed, C. Ricketts, 'Early English Pewter Drinking Mugs' (2018), p. 41 & p. 44, no. 101. The author notes this is the only recorded gadroon-decorated mug with a 'WR' mark, all the other verified examples bear an 'AR' mark (Queen Anne). Hence this mug must have been made between 24 June 1700 and 23 April 1702, the dates of William Hux opening his shop in St. Giles, Cripplegate, London and Queen Anne's Coronation.
