Jack Pountney lived for the early part of his life in the area of the Thames Docklands and later at Blackheath where, among close neighbours, was the marine painter, Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971). Pountney was an active member of the Blackheath Art Society and also exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists.
