British Navy / Submarine interest: a presentation plaque to Vice-Admiral Woods - the shield-shaped plaque with brass presentation plaque below an applied brass mount depicting a submarine between two whales, the plaque commemorating the Vice-Admiral's visit aboard the USS Orion (ASIB) at Norfolk, Virginia, during a NATO exercise 'Fish Play IV' on 16th October 1959', the reverse with hand inscribed card detailing the Vice Admiral's family connections, 19.5 x 20cm.
* Vice-Admiral Wilfrid John Wentworth Woods GBE, KCB, DSO & Bar, DL (1906-1975) was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1926 and specialised in submarines, with his first command as a lieutenant in HMS Seahorse in 1935, before promotion to lieutenant-commander of HMS Nelson in 1936. He served with distinction in WW2 and was awarded the DSO and bar and the White Eagle of Yugoslavia for his work aboard HMS Triumph in the Mediterranean theatre. Post-war he commanded HMS Forth and went on to the Imperial Defence College in 1951 before commanding HMS Indomitable and promotion to Rear-Admiral in 1955 and Vice-Admiral and NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic in 1958. Further promotions within NATO and to Admiral in 1960 followed, and in 1962 he was made First and Principal Naval ADC to Queen Elizabeth II. His last appointments were as Commander in Chief, Portsmouth and Allied Commander in Chief, Channel between 1963-65.
