ENGLISH SEALED ONION. 6ins high, 6ins diam. Classic free blown onion, c. 1710-15. Dark green/ black glass. Re-annealed lip pointed string rim (some chips, see Easy Live Auction). Very well struck, detailed, seal (chipped 2 to 3-o-clock) rampant horse on helmet crest, surmounting coat of arms of a bend with three estoiles (6 pointed stars). A similar seal listed in Burton (p1490) illustrated but a poor drawing though apparently matching this seal? That was an earlier taller necked magnum (stretched onion) illustrated by photographs in both Morgan (Sealed Bottles p50) & Bossche (Antique Glass Bottles p74, pl14). The coat of arms not identified by Burton & this smaller bottle not listed. The Carey family (Burton p1313-14 & 1398-99) had a similar coat of arms but the bend bearing roses rather than stars, & no crest. Base kick up, pontil. Top section appears to have been off/ reglued. It is what it is but in essence an opportunity to acquire an iconic piece of early sealed black glass for a fraction of the norm. for a mint example. Displays well.
