Two 19th century Chinese fans, Qing dynasty, the first quite large, the cream gauze leaf painted with grasshoppers, crawling over flowers, with butterflies and moths flying overhead, the monture including the ribs being wood lacquered in gold, featuring butterflies and coins, the loop fitted with a silk tassel, guard approx. 30cm; the second fan, with double paper leaf, is mounted on wood lacquered in black and gold, with buildings, figures and foliage on the guards, and floral designs on the gorge sticks, the leaf being painted with a solitary lady in contemplation, near a riverbank, the verso is plain, guard approx. 23cm (2)
The first fan is in fairly good order, some glue having soiled the leaf, bottom left. The second has chipped lacquer at the very tip of both guards, and the leaf is a little crumpled.
