A PAIR OF 19TH CENTURY CHARENTON PORCELAIN PORTRAIT FIGURES. modelled after paintings by Thomas Gainsborough, portraying the Duchess of Devonshire and the 'Blue Boy' (Jonathan Buttal), each painted in predominantly blue tones, the naturalistic bases bearing armorial crests and the mottos 'Cavendo Tutus' (Safe by being cautious) and 'Nobilitatas virtus non stemma character' (Virtue, not pedigree, is the mark of nobility), each with underglaze blue factory mark to the base, and with retailers marks for 'W. P. & G. Phillips of Bond St, London, Duchess of Devonshire 29cm high, Blue Boy 27cm high.
