£300
An early 20th Century Dunn Bennett Patent side plate from the wardroom of the Terra Nova, white with a dark blue border and gilt rim with a central crest 'British Antarctic Expedition Terra Nova R.Y.S' surrounding a penguin on a globe, printed to the reverse Dunn Bennett's Patent, Unchippable Surface, Burslem, England and impressed Patent S10, diameter 22.3cm, S/D.
There is, as visible in the photograph, a curling break from 10 o'clock to 1 o'clock - it does not go through the crest and there is old glue residue and marks in an old attempt to repair. At 2 o'clock there is an old hairline. The gilding has rubbed away in places and there is surface scratching from use.
Provanance - privately consigned, the current vendor was left this as a memento (circa 1998 / 2000) from an elderly neighbour, whom they had cared for.
