Weather Records from a Shropshire Home, 1938-1949
A Record of Rain and Temperature kept at Burwarton – Dingle Leys [Shropshire], 1 Jan 1938 to 30 Sept 1949. Oblong roy 4to., strongly bound.
Also gives monthly summaries, such as:
“A lovely summer month. A splendid hay harvest and partridges look promising” (July 1940).
“Coldest month recorded for many years – probably since 1895 – 21 days of continuous frost – easterly current / winds and probably the most sunless month on record. Snow lay very deep but due to drifting impossible to measure. The equivalent would have resulted in over 3’. (February 1947; it was indeed the most severe winter of the century up to that time, and also coincidentally the first year of the Cold War ).
And the final entry: “A remarkable month, bringing summer to a splendid end. Undoubtedly the best since 1921” (Sept 1949). As a m/ss., w.a.f. (1)
