A scarce pre WW1 War Department 8 day Rolex-marked Mark III dashboard/ desk/ cockpit watch, as used by the RFC, RNAS and RAF, the black figured white enamel dial transfer printed “Elliott Bros/ London/ Rolex 8 Days/ Mark III/ W broad arrow D” and “RAF Repair/ No 453”, the Octava movement numbered 48483, the back of the case deeply impressed with large broad arrow and “WD”, in its protective outer steel case numbered “23”, with perspex front cover. GC, the movement clean but not working (no apparent faults, probably just requires a service); with a copy of an invoice from a watch repairer which includes some research. Plate 4 £400-450
