1899 Boer Soldier's mail, early mobilisation on Natal Border, cover addressed to Pretoria marked ‘Veld dienst' with very early Hoofdlager Z.A.R cds for 9 OCT, and arrival cds for 11 OC. The Boer HQ (Hoofdlager) at this time was centered around Zandspruit on the Transvaal Natal border. The Transvaalers under General Joubert totalled around 14,000 men, in addition 6000 Free Staters under Commandant Prinsloo assembled near Van Reenans Pass. Some creases to cover, otherwise fine. Soldier's mail from this early period is scarce.
