Withdrawn - Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Edward VII issue, named to: 21563 FofW SSjt J Atingstoll RE.
Joseph Edward Artingstoll was born in Hyde, Cheshire, in 1865 and enlisted into the Royal Engineers in 1887. He served a full career of 21 years, rising to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant (Foreman of Works) before being discharged to pension in 1908. He re-enlisted into the Royal Engineers Reserve as a Sapper in October 1914 at the age of 48 and was posted to the 4th Reserve Battalion where he became an instructor. He served at home throughout the First World War, rising again to the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 before being finally discharged on the grounds of ill health in December 1918. He received no medals for his home service but was awarded the Silver War Badge. He died at Blacon, Chester, in 1945.
His eldest son, Joseph Artingstoll, also served in the Royal Engineers throughout the First World War in France & Flanders and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) and bar (London Gazette 28/09/1917 and 29/08/1918) in addition to the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. This medal group has been on the market in recent years but its present whereabouts are unknown.
With a biographical note, and copy papers including some family photographs, extract from Joseph (senior)’s service record and WW1 service record, his son’s WW1 MIC and copies of London Gazette entries confirming the MM and bar. Very Fine (VF) condition.
