Medieval harness pendant. Circa 14th century AD. Copper-alloy, 40mm x 31mm, 11.2g. A quatrefoil-shaped pendant decorated with the image, 'Pelican in its piety', a mother bird perching above her nest, facing left and plucking at her chest. The blood drips down to her young chicks  in the nest, allowing them to feed on her blood. The 'pelican in its piety' is a popular religious motif that was a symbol of Christ's sacrifice to mankind and was a common depiction in use at this time.
