BRAZIL/G.B./FRANCE - UNPAID COVER TO BORDEAUX WITH "COLONIES/&c.ART.13." & SCARCE "SOUTH·AMERM/LIVERPOOL/PACKET" MARKS: 30 Dec. 1854 unpaid EL from Rio de Janeiro to Bordeaux via steamship "La Plata" on the final British P.O. service from the River Plate (calling at Brazil & Madeira) to Liverpool (fine green "SOUTH·AMERM/LIVERPOOL/PACKET" cds - partly overstruck - on reverse). There were only four successful journeys made before the vessels were chartered as transports for the Crimean War effort. "COLONIES/&c.ART.13." accountancy mark (mostly fine, partly overstruck by "ANGL/CALAIS" cds & "15" decimes h.s. charge) on the front along with sender's cachet.
