Church Brown, New Town, a mahogany longcase clock the thirteen-inch break-arch silvered dial fully engraved with period decoration depicting a windmill and house next to a river, black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and makers name Church Brown New Town, with blued steel hands and a strike/silent dial within the arch, the arched-top mahogany case having fluted pillars to the hood with cast brass Corinthian capitals and quarter fluted columns to the trunk, height 227cm not including finial. Provenance: From Richard Barder Antiques. Illustrated and described on pages 126-127, Richard Barder, English Country Grandfather Clocks, Pub. David & Charles 1983. Inscribed to the owner within by Richard Barder. Church Brown is recorded as working in both New Town and Newbury, Berkshire in the late-18th century.
