Late 18th Century English School. Portrait of Captain Cook, after Nathaniel Dance, Watercolour on ivory, Inscribed 'Cap Cooke' verso, Oval, 2" x 1.65" (5.1 x 4.3cm). Notes: Believed to be a copy of the original portrait by Nathaniel Dance commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks in 1776, this is a rare miniature portrait of the great explorer. Two known miniatures in public collections are in The State Library in New South Wales and the Royal Society (neither of which depict Cook with a black cravat) (Cites DKYD5EKH)
