** LEEK (STAFFS.) - "LE BAGOT" PAROLE P.O.W. LETTER ENDORSED "Single Not Paid. Chas. Grey Agent" BY CENSOR; Fine 1 Jan. 1814 EL (typed transcript; wafer seal) from POW "Le. Bagot" on parole in "Leek" to a friend in Nantes spectacularly endorsed in red "Single. Not Paid" and "Chas. Grey Agent" [the Transport Office Agent and censor for Leek Parole POWs]; it was then charged "6" (decimes) on delivery, having been routed via London and Morlaix. It concerns recent rumours of Peace, ongoing efforts to have an exchange, the writer's surprise at never having received any letters in reply to his, and especially to one sent by a returning fellow-POW; "You must have heard from me by several of my friends and especially by Mr. Boutin my second [officer] of the Vautour [ship Vulture] who due to his age and his infirmities finally returned to his family after an imprisonment of 10 years." The Vulture was a French privateer from Nantes that was taken by the English off the coast of Portugal on 15 Jan. 1800; presumably Le Bagot was captured with her.
