Note: Charles John Ewen (1826-1883), then a Lieutenant in the 65th Regiment, travelled to New Zealand to write of military movements in the country between May 1846 and March 1851. He then retired by sale of commission in December 1854, before later becoming a Captain in the 2nd West Yorks Light Infantry Militia Feb 1855. He retired as an Honorary Major on the 11th April 1867.
