£3,300 - £3,600
1958 Matchless G80S. Registration number VFF 421 (non-transferable). Frame number 60060. Engine number 58 G80S 131797.
Honest, dependable and free of phoney pretensions, the big singles built by Associated Motor Cycles after WW2 neatly balance price and performance. The similar badge engineered 497cc AJS Model 18 and the Matchless G80 were revealed in late 1945 and stayed largely unchanged for the following three years.
They gained proper swinging arm suspension with skinny 'candlestick' shock absorbers and a more relaxed ride in 1949, followed by hairpin valve springs. In 1951 a light-alloy cylinder head and the chunky Jampot rear shocks for which the marque is well-known appeared. One of the biggest changes was in 1956 with the in-house gearbox.
First registered on the 3rd of October 1958 little is known of its early history but in October of 1994 it was bought by dealer Andrew Tiernan of Woodbridge and at this point the registration number became non-transferable, he sold it to Robert Hill of Hayling Island in February 1995 with a mileage of 42,355. He rebuilt the engine and carbs in 1997 and ran it for many years taking the mileage up to 52,592. Antony Reid bought it in February 2015 and soon afterwards our vendor bought it. Little used, the mileage is now 52,642 it is being sold due to lack of use.
Sold with the V5C, V5, various old MOT's and receipts for the parts used in the 1997 rebuild.
