£250
A selection of Portsmouth area cards - nearly all of the city and harbour - in a box containing a number of desirable postcards, and two modern albums with modern cards with a maritime and nautical theme, as well as a number of standard Golden Age and older cards.
The box contains approximately 89 real photographic and printed cards, including those in our first three photos which are among the more eye-catching ones in the box. Many are in plastic sleeves. Others are loose. They include two views of the interior of the town railway station; the Bat and Ball pub at Hambledon; two nice cards of Rowlands Castle; the bus terminus at Cosham; two PCs of HMS Vernon; a Commercial Road shopfront; HMS Nelson entering the Harbour; and HMS Royal Oak sailing past HMS Victory. The publishers include Stephen Cribb, Wright and Logan, Cozens, Marshall of Waterlooville. Other views include the Guildhall, John pounds House, North End, Buckingham House, Unicorn Gate, Kingston Church and Southsea Common, with LL, Tuck, Sweasey and Valentine amongst the other publishers. Some cards have faults but most are in good collectable condition.
Of the modern albums, (1) contains approximately 100 cards and small photographs, of which around 70 are modern and 30 standard size. The modern cards are ferries, hovercraft and sailing ships. The vintage cards have views of the floating dock, paddle stammers, Portsmouth Harbour views and Harbour Station Pier. The cards are generally in good condition, and a mix of real photo and printed cards. Five are published by Levy and Sons (LL) of Paris, and there is a Stephen Cribb card of Clarence Pier.
The second album (2) is damaged, mainly because it's so packed with cards and leaflets to promote Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. It contains approximately 120 cards, which are mainly modern but there are around 20 older cards including one by Stephen Cribb of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and HMS Victory. There's also a real photographic card of the wooden HMS St Vincent at sea; and a printed card of Scott's 'Discovery' in Portsmouth. But most of the cards are modern, and comprise the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory, with a couple of the Foudroyant. The cards are generally in good condition - with most of the modern cards near mint.
