Super Star Lot: A huge and simply magnificent antique original oil on canvas painting by the esteemed artist William Henry Midwood (b.1833 - d.1888). Features a portrait of a young farm girl gathering kindling for the fire. This is an incredibly well observed piece, the treatment of light and shadow enhanced to create sections of intense luminosity in the sunset clouds silhouetting the figure, juxtaposed with brilliant dark shadow cast in front of her. Midwood's delicate hand is evident in the soft rosie features of the girl's face, and her cold worn hand clutched tightly to her chest. The drapery of her clothes are beautifully achieved with deep folds, creating a highly dimensional composition. Housed in an incredibly ornate antique gilt Chippendale style frame with plaque reading the artist's name to base. Midwood is a well known artist who has works in a number of public and private collections. His works sell well at auction, with similar works fetching prices upwards of high thousnads at Bonham's. Slight repair gilt to frame.
MM: 98 x 119 cm in frame.
