Superb Barag Mask, East Sepik Province, Papua new Guinea. Carved hardwood, boar tusk, cassowary feathers, nassa shells, cuscus fur and fibre. This male mask is from Bungain Village in the Turubu Area on the coast of East Sepik Province in PNG. It dates from the early to mid-20th Century and was used in a ceremony called barag to give thanks to the spirits for a successful yam harvest. Meyer (1995, p.185) describes the barag (or Parak) as a male mythical spirit involved in initiation ceremonies for young men and in hunting. (Cf. Heuvel & Kooten, 1990, p.230). Approx L53cm.
