Coenwulf was the last great King of Mercia. with his brother Cuthred as the King of Kent. Coenwulf entered a Treaty with Beorhtric of Wessex in 799 Wessex being the junior partner. Around 800 Coenwulf enforced vassalage of East Anglia. As a result he was styling himself as Emperor like Charlemagne, the first use of this title by a British King. Coenwulf died in 821 resulting in his overlordship of southern England to collapse within two years of his passing.
