A Victorian William Gerrard, brass sextant with water gilt graduated arc and polished mahogany handle, in a fitted presentation case with two telescope lenses, the case bearing a plaque inscribed " The Samuelson Prize Presented to John Oliver Arnold for proficiency in Physical Science, June 1876. 27 cm x 25 cm x 12.5 cm deep Note: John Oliver Arnold (1858-1930) was Educated at King Edwards School, Birmingham later becoming Professor of Metallurgy, at the University of Sheffield (1889-1920), a pioneer in the use of vanadium and then molybdenum in the manufacture of steel that enhanced the physical properties of the resulting steel alloys. A private estate Note: John Oliver Arnold (1858-1930) was Educated at King Edwards School, Birmingham later becoming Professor of Metallurgy, at the University of Sheffield (1889-1920), a pioneer in the use of vanadium and then molybdenum in the manufacture of steel. The box has a crack to the cover and no key is present.
