The original canvas depicts a naked, dark-haired woman reclining on a red couch with a blue pillow. This is considered one of Modigliani's best known works and the painting nearly created a scandal when it was first exhibited in Paris. The painting was sold in 2015 for a record sum of just over $170 million at Christie's Auction House. There had been concerns that the painting might have been too risqué for some bidders and the painting was described by Christie's as leaping off the page as the most vibrant, sexual, lyrical of the catalogue raisonné of this marvellous artist. The painting was subsequently shipped to Shanghai and is displayed at the Long Museum, founded by Liu Yiqian and his wife, Wang Wei. This couple were determined to let the Chinese public enjoy world class art on a par with New York's Metropolitan or Guggenheim Museums. H: 94cm W: 122cm D: 3cm
