A selection of amber jewellery comprised of a butterscotch amber pendant, 2.6cm long, a larger clarified amber pendant, a pair of heat treated amber earrings and pendant with 'sun spangles', a ring, an oval pendant stamped 'silver' and four pairs of drop earrings.
We are pleased to be offering this lot from the stock of family run firm Shipton and Co., who were based in Hastings White Rock area, and who were unfortunately forced to close their doors in 2014 after a section of the rock face above collapsed onto their shop, making the building unsafe. Beginning work in 1701 an amber room was made for the Berlin City Place and was moved in 1716 to the Catherine Place in Russia. It covered more than 55 square metres and contained over 6 tonnes of amber. To avoid Nazi looting the room was dismantled and eventually disappeared during WWII. A replica has since been created. Before its loss, it was considered an eighth wonder of the world. Amber is is a fossilised tree resin and as one of natures plastics amber is often exposed to heat and other treatments to create different effects. During the first half of the 20th century the stone fell out of fashion in jewellery in the UK, but has since experienced a huge surge in popularity. It has always been a favoured stone within Eastern cultures where the Chinese in particular believe it is lucky and has medicinal properties.
