FANCY BLUE-GREY-PRINTED ENVELOPE DECORATED BACK & FRONT SENT FROM LONDON TO DARTFORD; 4 May 1842 env. (minor creasing) prepaid with a faint and overstruck red "..../1D. PAID" Receiving House mark from London to "DARTFORD" (fine cds on reverse); there is a most attractive fancy frame printed around the edges of the address panel and a matching design around the four flaps. It was sealed with a diminutive gold "Emily" wafer (presumably the name of the sender). Postally used examples of any kind of fancy envelopes are very rare before 1850; this example is reminiscent of the famous Buchanan envelopes of 1840. Exhibition Item.
