** The artist's style combines a commitment to the French modernist traditions of subjective expression and blissful vision associated with Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse with a heritage of the observational illustration that is strong in 20th century art with reference to Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. Hartley studied art in the 1950s in Manchester and at The Royal College of Art, he took up a teaching post at Plymouth College of Art living alone in a rural cottage at Ermington and later lived at Presteigne on the Welsh border. He exhibited at the Peninsula Art Centre and has been represented by numerous galleries including Beaux Arts, York Street, Bath
In good original condition, the work has strong colour throughout and appears to be painted on brown paper, which has been mounted onto a cream card background, there is dirt to the underside of the glass and on the outside of the glass, contained within a plain outer oak wooden frame.
