Attributed to Mary Hardy (British, 1841-1915) View of a thatched cottage, thought to be Thomas Hardy's birthplace at Bockhampton, Dorset initialled and dated M. H. 1907 lower right and further (possibly later) inscribed verso oil on canvas 19.5 x 27.5cm Mary Hardy was a sister of the novelist Thomas Hardy and is known to have painted views of their cottage at Bockhampton. One such view, of larger proportions, is in the collection of the Dorset Museum (acc. no. 1941.7.67). The canvas presented here, with its loose brushwork, may be a study or sketch.
