Terence de Vere Whyte and Paddy Lynch misc: Ireland, Small 4to, dj, 1968. Review by Paddy Lynch (his copy signed Aug, 1968) for IT in typescript (Paddy at Home) with IT cutting of review. Important 5 page mss letter from the author De Vere Whyte to PL, with personal political insights of the time: ‘Dear Paddy, Thank you very much for the review. I made only one change. I was never a member of Cumann na Gaedheal. As a boy in Trinity I electioneered for Kevin ??? on the invitation of Gerard Sweetman when I wanted to show off as an orator. Then I acted as election agent for Ralph Brereton Barry. I ended both campaigns with deep depression and self-disgust. My Kevin O Higgins book stamped me as a supporter, but Costello was the only person who helped me. Paddy Mac G was elusive, friendly and irrelevant; Mulcahy polite and unforthcoming and suspicious; WT Cosgrave abusive. I got all from Kevin O Higgins widow and family. I have always thought De Valera a disaster. He and John Charles are the worst things that happened to Ireland in my lifetime. But that is personal. I am very much drawn to Lynch and to Cosgrave. I cannot pretend that Corish attracts me intellectually. I feel a deep admiration for Connolly and a nausea for Pearse….Yours Ever, Terence’. (1 with inserts.)
