LETTERS FROM AMERICA: an extensive collection of correspondence from a loving mother, Mrs John Robertson McMahon of Wetumpka, Alabama to her son, 'Darling Bobby' from April 1944 to her death in 1948. Affectionate, concerned and revealing much about life in America during and after World War II. 'The US Republican Party has nothing to be proud of' she writes in April 44: 'It certainly seems as if the isolationists are to have their day again after this war as they did after the last. And the world will be no better for this horrible carnage and slaughter'. Letters are largely concerned with local events, life revolving round local church, where her husband is a minister. At one such event, she meets a Mr Hickman who was 'with Lawrence in Arabia & was a good friend of Lord Allenby...'. She comments perceptively on US politics, in June 44 writing of 'a split in the Democratic Party' caused by Mrs Roosevelt, noting 'the south will never forgive her for the way she has behaved about negroes'. A poignant group of letters, contained in old box file. (Qty)
