Catholicism. 1815-38 Letters comprising 1815 letter to Lord Clifford at Ugbrook with a red Free datestamp but charged 11d, the Clifford family being Catholics so barred from sitting in the Lords (until the Catholic Reform Act of 1829) therefore not eligible for free postage; 1838 letter to Lord Clifford in Rome with Free datestamp applied in error, crossed out and returned, reposted at Chelmsford paid 2/- (Clifford now eligible for franking, but inland letters only); and 1819 letter from the new Baron Downer to Francis Freeling, his brother the former Baron and a Catholic had died, the new Baron Dormer is a Protestant so will take his seat in the Lords and therefore qualifies for the franking privilege.
